For those involved in designing, delivering and constantly improving the services of the Methodist Healthcare System, it is truly a healing ministry. Our mission statement of "Serving Humanity to Honor God" defines our ultimate purpose. And that goes far beyond just services and facilities.
Methodist Healthcare System cares for the medically underserved of our community in a number of ways. Through the providing of care at our five hospitals to everyone, regardless of ability to pay, and through the direct support of over 30 non-profit health and human service agencies serving the community, as well as through the ongoing support of the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County as the city's second largest employer with over 7000 associates - Methodist Healthcare is able to reach beyond the 15 facilities and caregivers at its core.
The birth of the Methodist Healthcare System in 1995 provided the greatest mechanism to address the needs of the underserved in San Antonio and South Texas through the Methodist Healthcare Ministries. As one of the two owners of the Methodist Healthcare System, the Methodist Healthcare Ministries receives half of all profits generated by MHS. The result? An ever-growing ability to further the overall mission of "Serving Humanity to Honor God."

Methodist Healthcare Ministries: In Service To The Community
Today, community caring has a new name: Methodist Healthcare Ministries - a tax-exempt organization dedicated to charitable causes with a special focus on providing both spiritual and quality health care services to the least-served segments of our population.
The following mission statement serves as the operating principle for the Methodist Healthcare Ministries.
  • We are here to improve individual and family health in South Texas as we continue our historic mission of "Serving Humanity to Honor God."
  • We have a duty to develop and maintain a thorough understanding of the constantly changing health resources available to people in our region.
  • We are charged to use this understanding to provide innovative and effective physical, mental, and spiritual resources. Our services, above all, promote healing and wellness. We educate, empower, and nurture wholeness of body, mind, and spirit among all people, with particular concern for lasting benefits to those least-served in our geographic area.
Methodist Healthcare Ministries is San Antonio's largest non-public funding source for community health care. This position was reached in 1996, after just one year of operation with $1,800,000 in funding provided to existing local non-profit agencies to expand their health care services. In 1997, this giving was expanded again with an extension of funding to those same entities again through the development of new programs and services for those in need and least able to pay. The 1997 funding level reached $3,800,000 and in 1998, $8,394,995 was given by Methodist Healthcare Ministries to fund health care services and programs for those least served in San Antonio, Bexar County and in key counties and towns in the 71 surrounding counties in the South Texas area.
Methodist Healthcare Ministries has invested a total of $54 million in our communities, making them the largest non-public source for community healthcare in San Antonio and south Texas.  In 2002 alone, they channeled $11.99 million in grants to deserving health and wellness agencies - an 18.7 percent increase over 2001 contributions.
