Who We Are - Our Heritage

Chartered in 1955, Methodist Hospital first opened its doors in 1963. Built in the middle of dairy and ranch land on the outskirts of northwest San Antonio, Methodist Hospital was the original and sole health care facility in the now nationally renowned South Texas Medical Center.
     From its beginning as a single, five-story, acute-care facility, Methodist Hospital has grown to be the flagship facility of the Methodist Healthcare System - the most preferred health care provider in San Antonio.
     Formed in 1995, out of a partnership of Methodist Healthcare Ministries, San Antonio's largest non-public funding source of community health care, and HCA, the Methodist Healthcare System includes 15 of San Antonio's most respected health care facilities, located throughout the community. In October of 1998, our newest facility, Methodist Children's Hospital of South Texas, opened its doors to serve the medical needs of all children. It is the only hospital in San Antonio designed and built just for this specialized type of care.
     As the Methodist Healthcare System has changed and adapted to meet the growing needs of our area, our commitment has remained the same-to continuously improve the health and wellness of our community by "Serving Humanity to Honor God." It was true when we were first chartered as a single hospital in 1955. And it will be true for every facility of the Methodist Healthcare System well into the next millennium.
