Diabetes is a serious problem
South Texas has more diagnosed cases of diabetes than any other part of the United States. According to the most recent estimates, diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death in America. In Texas, eight percent or 1.3 million people, have been diagnosed with diabetes and in Bexar County, and seven percent (73,000 people) have been diagnosed with diabetes. It’s estimated that more than 340,000 people in Texas are living with diabetes and don’t know it. People with diabetes are more likely to develop kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, strokes, infections leading to amputations and other complications.
Methodist Healthcare offers comprehensive diabetes services
At Methodist Healthcare, we believe preventing diabetes or understanding and taking control of your diabetes is vital to a longer, healthier life. Methodist Healthcare offers comprehensive services to treat and manage diabetes. The treatment team includes specially trained nurses, diabetes educators, registered dietitians, pharmacists, physical therapists and endocrinologists.
The Methodist Healthcare Diabetes Education Department, recognized by the American Diabetes Association for Quality Self-Management Education, offers education for all types of diabetes:
- Type 1
- Type 2
- Gestational
- Children’s
Outpatient self-management classes are available at Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital and Methodist Stone Oak Hospital.
If you are newly diagnosed with diabetes or need help managing your diabetes, ask your doctor for a referral or prescription to take a self-management class. You can also bring a loved one to class to support your efforts to live a healthier life. Physician referrals or prescriptions should be faxed by your doctor to 210-575-6270. Most insurance plans cover diabetes education classes.

We offer specialized diabetes education for people who are
- Hearing impaired or deaf
- Visually impaired or blind
- Spanish-speaking only
Outpatient self-management classes are taught by registered nurses with special training in diabetes education and by registered dietitians.

Support Groups
Diabetes Support Groups offer an opportunity for people lving with diabetes to meet and share experiences ranging from everyday concerns to proven strategies that will lead to success in living with diabetes.
Topice vary each month and your suggestions are welcome. The groups are lead by an experienced registered nurse who is a certified diabetes educator.
