A gastroenterologist specializes in diagnosing and treating disorders of the entire digestive tract including the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver. Gastroenterology involves the study of how foods and liquids move through the stomach and intestines. Gastroenterologists have special knowledge of how the body digests and absorbs nutrients into the body, removal of waste from the system and the function of the liver as a digestive organ. Medical tests can be ordered to determine the cause of a person’s digestive disorders. Diagnoses include colon polyps and cancer, hepatitis, gastroesophageal reflux (heartburn), peptic ulcers, colitis, gallbladder disease, nutritional problems, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and pancreatitus.
