Pain Management
Physicians specializing in pain management evaluate, treat and rehabilitate people in pain that can be caused by a variety of medical conditions from cancer treatment to back pain to migraine headaches. Your primary care doctor may refer you to a pain management specialist if your pain does not go away with oral medications or simple therapies such as resting the area that is causing pain and the use of heat and ice. Pain management has a role in identifying the precise source of the problem and determining the optimal treatment. Pain can be treated with medication, physical rehabilitation, surgery and psychiatric treatment.
The level and intensity of pain experienced can by different for each person. While you are a patient at a Methodist Healthcare facility, your physicians and nurses will frequently ask you to rate your pain on a scale of 0 – 10. With “0” meaning no pain to “10” being the worst pain imaginable. Based on your response, pain relief medication will be prescribed to help you be more comfortable so you can rest and heal.
