Fredericksburg, Texas — Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women in the United States, accounting for about 30% of all new female cancers annually, according to the American Cancer Society. With approximately 316,950 new cases of invasive breast cancer expected in 2025, early detection is critical to improving outcomes and saving lives.

The Methodist Hospital Hill Country Breast Center is dedicated to empowering women to take charge of their health through regular screening mammograms. Mammograms are the most reliable method for detecting breast cancer early, when it is most treatable. Early detection not only improves survival rates but also reduces the need for more invasive treatments.

"Regular screening mammograms are one of the most powerful tools we have in the early detection of breast cancer," said Dr. Sean Simpson, General Surgeon. "Early detection not only improves treatment outcomes but also provides women with more options and a greater chance of recovery. We encourage all women to prioritize their health by staying up to date with their screenings."

The center offers the latest digital mammography technology to combat breast cancer. With 3D mammography, images of the breast are captured from various angles, resulting in clearer and more accurate pictures. This technology allows radiologists to detect smaller cancers with greater detail, reducing the need for repeat scans and increasing the chances of early cancer detection. The benefits of 3D mammography include:

  • Fewer repeat scans (15 to 40 percent less) for additional testing, which reduces patient anxiety and costs.
  • Improved imaging for dense breast tissue, decreasing the need for additional diagnostic imaging.
  • A 40 percent increase in detection of invasive breast cancers.
  • A 27 percent increase in detection of all breast cancers.

The breast health experts at Methodist Hospital Hill Country are dedicated to protecting you and your loved ones from breast cancers and tumors. That is why they screen frequently and teach patients how to perform self-exams, because early detection can make all the difference.

The American Cancer Society recommends the following mammogram guidelines:

  • Women aged 40 to 44 have the option to begin annual mammograms.
  • Women aged 45 to 54 should undergo yearly screenings.
  • Women aged 55 and older can choose to continue annual screenings or switch to every other year.
