San Antonio, Texas — Methodist Hospital Specialty and Transplant unveiled a new History Wall honoring decades of innovation, medical excellence, and the dedicated teams that have behind one of the nation’s most highly regarded transplant programs.
The unveiling ceremony brought together physicians, transplant leaders, caregivers, and staff to reflect on the hospital’s journey and the collective impact of its lifesaving work. Designed to showcase key milestones and achievements, the Transplant History Wall traces the evolution of the transplant program and includes historical highlights dating back to 1984. It also recognizes the people whose expertise and compassion have transformed thousands of lives.
“Nearly 10,000 people have received the life‑saving gift of transplant at our hospital, and behind every number is a patient, a family, and a story — made possible only through the extraordinary generosity of organ donors,” said Amanda Weichold, Vice President of Transplant Services at Methodist Hospital Specialty and Transplant.
Methodist Hospital Specialty and Transplant is nationally recognized for the scale and impact of its transplant program. To date, the hospital has performed more than 9,000 organ transplants, including 7,913 kidney transplants, 1,096 liver transplants, 116 kidney-pancreas transplants, and 70 pancreas transplants. These achievements represent not only clinical excellence but also thousands of second chances at life for patients across Texas and beyond.
In kidney transplantation, the program continues to redefine what is possible. In 2021, Methodist Hospital Specialty and Transplant became the only transplant center in the United States to perform more than 200 living donor and more than 200 deceased donor kidney transplants in a single year, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). The program is also recognized as the largest Hispanic kidney transplant program in the nation and the largest living donor and kidney paired donation program in Texas.
The Transplant History Wall chronicles these accomplishments while reinforcing the hospital’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to transplant care, advancing innovation, and delivering patient-centered outcomes. Leaders emphasized that honoring the past is essential to shaping the future of transplant medicine.
Now permanently installed within the hospital, the wall serves as an educational and inspirational feature for patients, visitors, and staff, standing as a lasting tribute to the hospital’s legacy of excellence and its continued mission to save lives.
