San Antonio, Texas — Laughter, paint, and moments of connection filled the artium of Methodist Children’s Hospital as San Antonio FC players Emil Cuello, Nicky Hernandez, Diogo Pacheco, and Richard Sanchez spent time with pediatric cancer patients creating something truly special — custom-painted sneakers designed side by side with the kids themselves.
As the official healthcare system of San Antonio FC, Methodist Healthcare supports community initiatives that bring care, connection, and compassion both within the hospital walls and beyond.
The hands‑on experience gave patients a chance to express themselves through color and design, while players leaned into the creativity and conversation that followed. Each pair of sneakers became a unique reflection of the child who designed it, capturing moments of joy, imagination, and resilience. Players also visited the pediatric oncology unit to spend time with patients who were unable to attend the art session, ensuring every child had the opportunity to feel supported and included.
“I had a bunch of fun,” said Annie Cordero, age 8, one of the patients who participated. “I am excited to see the shoes out at the game. I’ve never painted shoes with a soccer player.”
These one-of-a-kind sneakers will take on an even bigger role later this month. During San Antonio FC’s Kick Cancer Night on April 25, the coaching staff will wear the custom shoes on the sidelines, providing a powerful visual reminder of the strength and creativity of children fighting cancer.
“Sometimes when you’re playing fútbol, you get caught up in so many things that seem to matter, but there are so many other things that matter much more,” said Diogo Pacheco, SAFC winger. “It’s a very special feeling to be with these kids and share this moment with their families.”
Following the game, the sneakers will be auctioned off, with proceeds benefiting St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a pediatric- cancer focused organization. Funds raised will help extend support beyond the hospital walls and into the wider community.
