San Antonio, Texas — Methodist Hospital celebrated the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the new Methodist Physicians Women's Services and Midwifery Clinic in the Medical Center, expanding access to comprehensive, personalized maternity care for women and families across South Texas. This is the second midwifery clinic opened by Methodist Healthcare, reflecting its continued investment in women’s and children’s services across the region.
The new clinic introduces hospital-based midwifery services as part of Methodist Hospital's commitment to providing women with more choices throughout pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum recovery, and lifelong women's healthcare. The practice combines the personalized, relationship-centered approach of certified nurse midwives with the advanced resources available through Methodist Hospital and Methodist Children's Hospital.
The clinic's collaborative care model allows patients to receive care from certified nurse midwives working alongside obstetricians, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, nurses, and neonatal experts. Patients benefit from individualized care while maintaining immediate access to advanced medical services when needed.
"At Methodist Healthcare, we are continually looking for ways to meet the evolving needs of the families we serve," said Rachel Goldsmith, CEO of Methodist Children's Hospital and Women's Services. "Every family deserves access to care that meets their unique needs and preferences. By bringing hospital-based midwifery services to Methodist Hospital, we are expanding access to compassionate, personalized maternity care while providing the confidence that comes from delivering within a system equipped to care for the most complex maternal and newborn needs."
The launch of the clinic further strengthens Methodist Healthcare's women's services program. Methodist Hospital is designated as a Maternal Level IV facility, the highest level of maternal care available, and is home to a Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), providing specialized care for the region's most complex maternal and neonatal cases.
Certified nurse midwives provide comprehensive prenatal, labor and delivery, postpartum, and women's health services, with an emphasis on education, shared decision-making, and personalized support. The hospital-based model offers families the opportunity to pursue a low-intervention birth experience when appropriate while ensuring seamless access to physician specialists and hospital resources.
"The addition of hospital-based midwifery services expands the options available to women while maintaining the highest standards of safety and clinical excellence," said Jana Sullivan, Certified Nursing Midwife and Director of Women's Services. "Midwifery care is rooted in education, partnership and empowering women throughout their pregnancy and lifespan. Our collaborative model allows patients to benefit from the personalized care of certified nurse midwives while having immediate access to obstetric physicians, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, and advanced hospital resources whenever needed."
The clinic also complements Methodist Hospital's ongoing investment in women's and children's services, including facility enhancements, expanded access to specialty care, and innovative programs designed to improve maternal and infant health outcomes.
