When Fredericksburg resident Dwight Oestreich, 80, began experiencing persistent belching along with pain in his left arm and shoulder, he knew something was not right.
Those symptoms ultimately led to the discovery of a significantly blocked coronary artery and a successful cardiac procedure at Methodist Hospital Hill Country — without having to leave the community he calls home.
After seeking medical attention, Oestreich underwent evaluation at Methodist Hospital Hill Country. Further cardiac testing revealed severe blockage in one of his coronary arteries that required intervention.
"My artery was pretty well blocked," said Oestreich.
He was admitted on Tuesday, underwent a stent procedure Wednesday and returned home Thursday.
"While many people recognize chest pain as a warning sign of heart disease, some patients experience less traditional symptoms. Persistent symptoms such as arm pain, shoulder discomfort, indigestion-like symptoms or other unexplained changes should be evaluated by a medical professional,” said Dr. Christopher Thompson, cardiologist at Methodist Hospital Hill Country.
For Oestreich and his wife, Karen, the experience was especially meaningful because the care he needed was available in Fredericksburg, close to home and close to family.
"I really appreciated that the procedure could be performed in Fredericksburg," said Oestreich. "In the past, we would have had to travel to San Antonio or Austin, spending a day driving back and forth. Dr. Christopher Thompson made us feel very comfortable."
Karen Oestreich shared her appreciation for the care her husband received, noting how reassuring it was to avoid a lengthy trip during an already stressful time. The family expressed gratitude for Dr. Thompson and the cardiac team whose expertise allowed Dwight to receive advanced cardiac care locally.
The Oestreichs also praised the care they received in the Emergency Department, including the professionalism and compassion shown by Dr. Tamara Beard and the nursing staff.
"They were on top of everything," Oestreich said. "I was treated quickly and the nurses were very good."
Oestreich also commended the entire hospital team — from the Emergency Department staff and nurses to environmental services, dietary staff, administration and Chaplain Andrews.
"Everyone was helpful, friendly and remarkably patient," he said.
For the Oestreich family, access to high-quality cardiac care in Fredericksburg made a challenging experience much more manageable and reinforced the value of having specialized care close to home.
Methodist Hospital Hill Country continues to advance cardiac care for patients throughout the Texas Hill Country, including enhancements to its cardiac catheterization lab, the addition of Percutaneous Coronary Intervention services and expanded electrophysiology capabilities. These advancements help more patients receive specialized heart care locally, supported by modern technology, physician expertise and care teams close to home.
